Last October, after a gastronomic tour around Binondo, I was again fortunate to be invited by Sir Rence Chan for an art deco heritage tour around Far Eastern University.
Sir Rence is an FEU alumnus and member of the Filipinas Stamp Collectors Club. He hosts free heritage tours around Manila and I’m just so grateful I met him. For a girl so curious about history, I never really had the courage nor the luxury to roam around historical sites in Manila. And it’s just so wonderful to have a friendly and knowledgeable guide to connect me with my cultural past. Sir Rence is also the blogger behind Collector’s Connection.
Being the typical probinsyana that I was, I never really considered FEU to be a haven of historical treasures simply because from the outside, it looked nothing like a university from the early 30’s. Also considering that most ancient schools in Manila have a Spanish name (Universidad de Santo Tomas, Colegio de San Jose), one would really be surprised to know that FEU has been awarded by the UNESCO-Asia Pacific for having the largest number of surviving art deco structures in Asia way back in 2005.
