Life and death in their most intricate of definitions remain the world’s biggest mystery. In a mundane world where life begins at birth and death on the grave, stories of corpses breathing air again remain a controversy. People are made to believe that the dead does not come back to life yet there are these classic tales of the dead rising up to tell their story. Whether a believer in the afterlife or a skeptic of the transcendental, what really are the odds of eternity?
I’m a spiritual person and a true believer of the afterlife and anything else supernatural. I’ve collected a few stories around the net that are bound to make you think about the afterlife. I challenge nonbelievers to make sense of all these.
THE MAN WITH NO PULSE
A 45 year old attorney from Texas, Rob Elliot, met with death himself the day he had a heart attack. His wife called 911 then started doing the CPR. No pulse. The paramedics arrived and continued reviving him. Again, no pulse. Lead paramedic, Darren Jenner, even hooked Elliot to a cardiac monitor, which unfortunately showed no signs of life. It was thirty minutes of exhausting CPR and defibrillation when a pulse was detected. However, knowing the debilitating effects of losing oxygen to the brain for that long, everyone expected he’s either going to be a vegetable or be dead for good. Thirty minutes is too much. The brain can only live up to 10 minutes without oxygen, and that entails a lot of damage that could even tie a person to a machine. A day after the incident, when Jenner decided to follow up on Elliot at the hospital, amazingly she had a conversation with a live man who used to be thirty minutes dead. Preparing for the worst, his wife came to the hospital only to find him sitting on his bed, smiling at her and saying “Hi Babe.”
Rob Elliot is considered a healthy person, not one you would expect to die of heart attack. Yet he did and was brought back to life just in time for their 14th wedding anniversary. His wife has never been so happy.
THE BABY WHO KICKED IN HER COFFIN
Brazilian baby Yasmin Gomes died immediately after her delivery. After relentless attempts of being revived, she was pronounced dead, placed in a box then laid in the hospital chapel. Her grandmother, together with a mortician came in three hours later and was shocked to see movement inside the box. The baby opened her eyes and suddenly they knew God brought her back to life. Devastation was turned to exultation in just a snap. Doctors came in to check her health status and was surprised she’s in a healthy stable condition. Rejoicing mother, Jenifer Da Silva Gomes said, “There is no explaining miracles. They happen as God wants. If it was His will that our daughter had died, we would have accepted it, but he brought her back, so there must be a higher purpose in all this.” Her name was then changed to Victoria, a Portuguese name for “victory”.
At almost 7 months of pregnancy, expectant mother Kate Ogg gave birth to twins: one female and another male. The first one, Emily was delivered successfully and was vitally stable. Unfortunately the other one, Jamie, at only 2 lbs was showing no signs of life. The medical staff tried to revive him for twenty minutes before his time of death was called. The doctors asked her what she would’ve named the infant, then delivered her the dreadful news. Devastated like any mother whose kid just died, she unwrapped the baby, took her gown off her chest and hugged him. The infant laid on her chest as she tearfully told him about his sister and the plans his parents have for him. After two hours of mourning, it seemed the baby gasped for air. She was shocked at what she just saw but the doctors dismissed it as a reflex, like the soul coming out of the flesh. Instinct told her to try and feed the baby and like a living hungry infant it started sucking her breast. Its eyes opened and even reached out to hold his mother’s finger.
LOVE WILL KEEP HER ALIVE
A 49 year old grandmother, Lorna Baillie had a heart attack one day. After three hours of CPR, and I’m amazed at how doctors can go for that long, her time of death was called and condolences were made. Then Baillie’s husband, John, 58 years old, came close and whispered, “Lorna, come back. I love you.” Suddenly, like Sleeping Beauty awaken by a prince’s kiss, her color started improving, her eyelids twitched and her hand seemed to squeeze her eldest daughter’s hand. The family members were stunned to see these so they asked the nurse who assured them all those were involuntary movements. The doctor came in, witnessed the miracle and sent her to the ICU immediately. The incredible recovery was unnatural considering she had a failed kidney and she was in a coma. A few days later she was moved from the ICU to the medical ward in a better health condition. An MRI scan of her cranium showed no obvious signs of brain damage.
AWAKEN BY A FUNERAL ACCIDENT
It was a cool and damp day in Braughing village, Hertfordshire when local farmer Matthew Wall was taken to his final destination in a funeral procession, his family and friends walking in grief. It was a smooth and mournful walk until one pallbearer slipped on a wet leaf and dropped the coffin causing quite a commotion. The crew pulled it together and continued on the walk when suddenly they heard a knock from the inside of the casket. Let’s assume the pallbearer dropped the coffin again as it was too overwhelming to carry a potential zombie. Anyway, Wall got a second chance at life. He married his then fiance and lived up to 24 years. The whole village heard about the story and “Old Man’s Day” was declared. Every year, on the 2nd of October, the children of the village will come and sweep the lane in front of the church to avoid the same story from ever happening again.
A fever in 18th century Ireland used to be left undiagnosed and people died soon after. Marjorie, the wife of the wealthy Dr. John McCall died of such cause. She had this expensive gold wedding ring the mortician could not seem to remove from her swollen finger so she was buried in Shankhill cemetery with the ring. News broke throughout the town that lured a few opportunists. Soon enough, a group of tomb raiders started digging her grave for the gold ring. If the mortician couldn’t remove the ring in a gingerly manner, the gang decided to take desperate measures and tried sawing the finger apart. As the blade cut into her finger, a whisk of life entered her and she sat up and screamed, which sent the boys running for their lives. She struggled to pull herself out of her grave and walk herself home. Meanwhile, in the McCall manor, Dr. John was having a few drinks with friends in order to get away from the sorrow of his wife’s loss and to celebrate his bachelorhood. There was a knock on the door, which he opened. The sight of his undead wife scared the life out of him, literally. He was soon buried in his wife’s grave.
