It was the middle of the May when I felt my soul taken from me as I suddenly lost the appetite to do anything productive. It’s unnerving to lose the drive to accomplish many things when you know you’ll be craving for this free time someday. It’s like when you have the time you don’t have the energy and when you have the energy you don’t have the time. The irony in itself gives me headaches.
I started this blog with the mantra of relieving myself off boredom and making the most of my writing abilities and it is my deepest wish that I help people overcome theirs as well. I’ve conjured up a short list of things that usually jolt me back to productivity. These may not work for anyone but at the end of this list I dare you to just try them and make your own list. Time passes by so fast and we have but one life, let’s make the most of it.
Here are a few tricks I found handy when I’m so bored.
Watch someone’s biography.
Have you ever been curious how Elvis Presley became the King of Rock ‘n Roll? Or how Mahatma Gandhi became a well loved prophet of peace? Indeed, this is a great way to burn your boredom without doing much at all. All you have to do is watch, learn and get inspired. There are a lot of documentaries readily available on Youtube and everywhere else on the internet. At times it may bore you even more but trust me, sometimes the cosmos conspire to make you watch something you can identify with and get your cogwheels rolling again.
Discover New Music
Before Spotify was invented, I was obsessed with 8tracks. It is an online playlist sharing website that allows you to upload and create a mix of your favorite songs, as well as categorize them into different genres that others may check them out too. Honestly, I love listening to the radio but when Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift’s songs started airing almost ten times a day, I needed an alternative. Besides, I’m a lover of no particular genre and if you’re like that too then you may consider discovering a new song or artist to obsess with while you’re still on a break from productivity.
Do household chores
I know. Snoozefest. But really, every time I realize that I suddenly have no ounce of excitement over anything, almost always there’s dishes on the sink, a bunch of stuff around my bed and hair everywhere. Maybe your boredom is a siren from your home, begging you to clean it for once. These are the little reminders that you don’t have a right to be bored at this moment.
Read a book
Warning, reading a book may put you to sleep. However, there’s also a possibility of getting sucked into the story you’re reading, depending on the author’s writing, of course. As much as I like reading Fantasy and Chick Lit books, I love Self Help books more. I get to draw in a lot of information about life without trying so much. I learn about tips on this and that and I then get reeled in to evaluating my views on the topics presented.
Play a Game
Talk about eternal boredom busters. If you need a break from whatever you’re currently preoccupied in, playing a game is a great ice breaker. And with ice breaker, I mean a really temporary thing. Take care not to get sucked in the gaming world. Facebook is already flooded with game applications. There’s also Miniclip for a larger variety of online games. And my favorite, Lumosity, a website with dozens of games created mainly for brain training.
Surf the Internet
If you don’t have a Stumbleupon or Delicious profile, then it’s time to create one now. Those two along with 9gag, Buzzfeed and Imgur are my favorite sites to pass the time, discover something new and defeat boredom. There’s a mouthful and more of interesting ideas and stories online. Also try playing with Google Search. Honestly, this one never disappoints. You simply enter random words and watch the internet surprise you.
